THOUGHTS AND EVENTS FROM MY FIRST AND NOW SECOND YEARS AS A JESUIT VOLUNTEER IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON…

Hit and Run and Dumpster Diving

En route home Friday after work, I was totally hit by a truck.  Me flying over my handlebars left me with two almost instantly purple bruises (photos will be added soon)  and my wheel being bent upon impact so much it no longer rotated   The next morning, I took the LSAT – took some bruises of a different kind.  It was a hit and run on my part:  I arrived unprepared and left relatively detached from the outcome.

MASSIVE purple bruises on my inner right thigh, front left thigh, right shoulder blade, and left forearm DO remind me you can NEVER give cars the benefit of the doubt.  My bruised ego from the 5 and half hours of logic and reasoning standardized test questions almost hurts worse.  It’s a good thing I’m not totally (if at all anymore) convinced of law school in my future….

My gut tells me (in response to the question, “What would you do tomorrow if money were not an issue for a living?”) I’d rather be on Broadway or a Ride the Ducks tour guide.

Sunday, the Jesuits at Seattle University hosted us for brunch following the 11am mass.  We JVs are not used to chicken apple sausage links, bacon & cheddar/tomato & herb quiche, blueberry pancakes, hash browns, limitless supply of fresh fruit, and more breads and scones to choose from than we would otherwise have ALL YEAR.  Walking home stuffed to the point of nausea (definitely not our defining moment of living simply) I think we felt 10x more grateful for the gym access they gave us.

Maria really wanted to fly her kite so we headed out to Gasworks park, which was a DREAM.  It was GORGEOUS outside, and watching all the kite fliers, boats (including the Ride the Ducks boats!), kayakers, dogs!, hipsters, and on-romantic-dates-couples from the hillside overlooking the water/city was awesome.  We encountered some bus complications on the way, but were without complaint as it was sunny and 65 degrees.  Between Brendan smoking his cigar, Nick reading aloud in spanish, Maria flying her dollar store plastic kite, seeing outdoor dance lessons, it was an ideal Sunday (with photo opps that I’ll have to post later…).

Probably the highlight was the way home, however, when as we were trudging up a hill towards the bus stop, our senses kicked in at the aroma of baking bread.  Whereas we had been complaining of being too stuffed all day, instantly we reconsidered and followed our noses to the Essential Bakery a block away, thus discovering the famous dumpsters for diving.  We were not alone in our pursuit – several other apparent residents in the neighborhood were reaping a harvest as well.  We decided on Rosemary, Mille Grain, and Walnut loaves as well as some dinner roles.  Delicious when out of the oven for a few minutes, dunked in homemade olive oil, basil & parmesan accompanied by our first salad from the garden! Pretty much a free, grade A for sustainability meal – delicious.
