Yep, we could/should totally do this.
But in all reality, this is a potential inspiration. We could easily construct a series of shelves from the wood in the basement. Mount these artistically to the wall, and then work on filling them with plants, and presto…your drab white wall is glowing with life. We have almost all the materials necessary already.

@maria: i think mounting planters on the wall would be way too heavy. theres no way you could support the weight of all that dirt with a few screws.

I’m not talking full on planters. I was thinking a few little potted plants on each shelf. That wouldn’t be too heavy, esp. if we used lightweight pots. If a mounted shelf can hold books, it could hold plants.
We might need a studfinder though. I can check the basement.

Having grown up in the presence of painters (my dad’s company has four employees, and two of them are painters), I would have to vehemently disagree with the fact that people do not truly enjoy painting walls.
Also, I’m into this plants idea.

AND if we want to combine the painting theme… we could recycle the different paint colors from the basement and paint the shelves all different colors.
We could even go wild and make non-traditional shelf shapes and piece them together. Think T-frame, L-shaped… I’m envisioning a 3-D Piet Modrian, dispersed, with greenery spilling out.
Thoughts? I could do some sketches and check the available paint colors for compatibility.
